St. Louis County Opens 24 Hour Cooling Shelter for Storm Victims

Due to last night’s storms causing widespread power outages and today’s extreme heat, the St. Louis County Parks Department has set up a cooling shelter staffed by the American Red Cross.

The North County Recreation Complex at 2577 Redman Avenue (63136) opens to the public as a cooling shelter at 9:30 a.m. It will remain operational around the clock as long as needed to provide relief from the heat.

“With the dangerous temperatures we are dealing with, it’s critical for anyone who does not have power or air conditioning to seek immediate relief,” County Executive Steve Stenger said. “Our shelter has a professional staff and is stocked with plenty of food and water. Also, St. Louis County Police will be providing transportation to the shelter for seniors living in the affected neighborhoods.”

Anyone needing information on cooling assistance can call 2-1-1 at any time.

The County Executive has also allocated $200,000 in federal grant money this summer to Cooldownstlouis.org to establish a utility assistance fund.
