A multi-jurisdictional sobriety checkpoint will be conducted by the St. Louis County, St. John, and Overland Police Departments, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol on Friday, October 23, 2009. Over forty police officers and troopers will be checking motorists in an effort to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on our streets and highways. The sobriety checkpoint will be conducted in St. Louis County, Missouri from 10:30 pm to 3:00 am. The location was selected for the special enforcement because of alcohol-related accidents at or near the location in recent months. Inconvenience to motorists will be minimal. The officers and troopers participating in the enforcement have had additional training in the recognition of motorists who have had too much to drink or are under the influence of illegal drugs. Officers will also issue citations for seat belt and other violations. Chief Tim Fitch stated, "The goal of this enforcement is to save lives by reducing alcohol-related accidents and increasing seat belt use". Media inquiries should be directed to Sergeant David Stuckmeyer, St. Louis County Police Department, by calling the Bureau of Communications at 314-889-2341, and requesting a return phone call. Media interviews and an observation area will be provided.
