South County Police Officers Remove Three Sleeping Residents From Burning Home

For Immediate Release 17-Aug-2009

On Sunday, August 16, 2009, at 3:30 AM, St. Louis County Police Officers Tony Amaro and Nicholas Nazzoli, South County Precinct saw a home on fire on the 1000 block of Druso Lane. Officers advised the dispatcher that the west side of the house and the entire garage were fully engulfed with flames coming through the roof. Two cars were parked in the driveway but no one would answer the door to the home.

Officer Stephanie Percich arrived at the scene to assist and the three officers kicked in the door and entered the burning house on their hands and knees due to the smoke. The smoke detectors in the home were sounding so they could not hear if anyone was yelling for help. They came to a bedroom where the 49 year old mother heard them calling out and opened the bedroom door. She awoke her 49 year old husband and the officers escorted them out of the home.

Once outside, the couple advised that their 19 year old son may still be in the house. The officers went back into the house and found the sleeping teenager in his room. Due to the heavy smoke and being awakened in the dark, the teenager was extremely disoriented and originally fought against the officer's attempts to rescue him. The officers forced him to the floor and pulled him out of the house.

The Mehlville Fire Protection District responded and extinguished the fire. The fire appears to be accidental.
