Hanley Road Corridor Steering Committee Launches the "Hanley Road Corridor Study"
ST. LOUIS - July 28, 2003
The St. Louis County Department of Highways & Traffic, in association with the cities of Brentwood, Maplewood, and Richmond Heights, announced today that it has started a study to comprehensively assess the current and future needs of a 1.8-mile portion of the Hanley Road Corridor from the I-64 Interchange south to Laclede Station Road. Recent and planned developments, the Cross-County Metrolink Extension, and improvements to I-64 are all expected to alter the function and demand placed on Hanley Road in this area. The study will assess existing and future conditions and develop alternative concepts to address problems related to congestion. The study aims to improve circulation throughout the study area, improve pedestrian access, provide a consistent streetscape, and provide for the safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
Study Kickoff
Initially, the study process was started by County Executive Buzz Westfall. Mr. Westfall asked that the county and city staffs, along with the 5th District Councilman, convene to discuss study specifics.
Hanley Road Corridor Study
All modes of ground transportation, from vehicular to pedestrian, will be analyzed as part of the study. The study will ultimately provide a preliminary plan of recommended improvements for the area. The study will include a conceptual design of the preferred alternative, and also an exploration and recommendation of finance strategies for improvements. The study should be completed by September 2003.
Hanley Road Corridor Steering Committee
The Hanley Road Steering Committee is made up of the three municipalities and the county who are responsible for land-use and transportation issues in the corridor. This committee will provide information and solicit input continuously from the public throughout the development of the plan. The steering committee will be working together during the planning process in a series of workshops. This committee will also be working together with stakeholders in the corridor, hold a public open house in September, and provide continuously updated information on the St. Louis County website.
The Hanley Road Corridor Steering Committee includes staff from the Saint Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic, the City of Brentwood, the City of Maplewood and the City of Richmond Heights. Additionally, the steering committee has retained Parsons Brinckerhoff, a local consulting firm, to conduct the engineering and planning analysis necessary for the development of the plan.
Hanley Road Corridor Stakeholder Committee
To assist the steering committee members through the study process, a stakeholder committee was formed. This committee includes steering committee members and developers and other major landowners, East-West Gateway Coordinating Council, Metro and MoDOT. Some of the agencies are participating in study costs and all have the opportunity to comment on the plan.
